The challenge

The lack of spaces in Rotterdam Zuid fostering culture, education, open discussions, and critical thinking is a increasing issue, as our city becomes more diverse in all senses. There is a gap between the innovative efforts of institutions such as universities or museums and their on-the-ground impact on the people and communities of the city. We need spaces that show citizens what resources, experiences & opportunities they can access. Through the format of a cafe people can meaningfully interact with education & cultural experiences while sipping on a cup of coffee and signing up for a workshop or a collaborative art session.

The solution

We want to create a space that makes 'high-brow' accessible, exploring how art, heritage & culture have always belonged to everyone. A space that feels welcoming to anyone and everyone, where they can explore their interests and get exposed to new ideas and concepts through formal & informal engagement with cultural activities. The idea is a space that serves comfort food, has a community library, provides lectures and workshops, and displays arts and crafts done in the community. The goal is to contextualize our cultures in our present suroundings and develop a shared sense of belonging built by exchange & good food.

Mission

Our mission is to provide a space for people to learn from and with each other with a book on their laps and a cup at their lips.
